School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering (SEME) was founded in 1980. There are currently 162 faculty and staff members (128 of them has PhD degree) including 37 full professors. Annually, approximately 500 undergraduate and 180 post-graduate students are enrolled in SEME. It has five undergraduate majors: Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering, and Energy and Power Engineering. Among them, Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering and Environmental Engineering have passed the undergraduate professional assessment and re-assessment from the Ministry of Construction，and selected as national first-class majors in 2019. There are four training directions for MS students: Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Municipal Engineering and HVAC Engineering. Among them, Municipal Engineering is a state-level specialty, Environmental Engineering and HVAC Engineering are provincial-level specialties in Shandong Province.
In recent years, SEME has made remarkable achievements in scientific research. It is engaged in more than 500 research projects, including 35 National Natural Science Foundations of China, 15 National Water Pollution Control and Management Technology Major Project of China, and more than 100 provincial and ministerial level projects. The average annual research funding is over 20 million RMB. In the past five years, SEME has published more than 800 academic papers, of which more than 200 have been indexed by SCI, EI, and ISTP; SEME has published more than 20 academic books and 20 patents. SEME has a total laboratory area of 5400 m2, including 4 undergraduate teaching laboratories: Chemical and Environmental Monitoring Laboratory, HVAC, and Thermal Energy Laboratory, Hydromechanics Laboratory and Environmental Science and Engineering Laboratory. In addition, SEME has a national and local joint engineering centre for Urban Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recycling, a key laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Energy Conservation and Pollution Control of Industrial Fluids, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Waste Heat Recovery and Energy Saving Equipment Technology, and Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Strengthening Energy and Environmental Equipment Construction, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of HVAC and Heat Pump, Collaborative Innovation Centre for Water Pollution Control and Recycling of Shandong Province (Cultivated), Shandong Metallurgical Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Engineering Technology Research Center, and Qingdao New Environmental Protection Technology Laboratory, etc. The total value of research instruments from SEME exceeds 40 million RMB.
SEME attaches great importance to international exchange and cooperation. So far, it has established long-term cooperation with universities and companies from different countries or regions, including Germany, the United States, Sweden, Norway, South Korea, Japan, Canada, Iran, etc. SEME has secured more than ten international cooperation projects, with a total funding of nearly 100 million RMB.
